This post at Boing Boing about hotel coffee pots being used as portable meth labs led to a comment from a reader about how the coffee pot itself could be viewed as illegal under Texas law. Like most laws, the devil is in the details, but the following list details items that are now controlled chemical laboratory apparatus.

(A) a condenser;
(B) a distilling apparatus;
(C) a vacuum drier;
(D) a three-neck or distilling flask;
(E) a tableting machine;
(F) an encapsulating machine;
(G) a filter, Buchner, or separatory funnel;
(H) an Erlenmeyer, two-neck, or single-neck flask;
(I) a round-bottom, Florence, thermometer, or filtering flask;
(J) a Soxhlet extractor;
(K) a transformer;
(L) a flask heater;
(M) a heating mantel;
(N) an adaptor tube.

Teachers are specifically exempt. Owning this stuff is not illegal, but as I skimmed the law it seems as though anybody not connected to a school buying this stuff could automatically be considered suspect by the anti-drug terrorists that run law enforcement in Texas. I would think many high school age homeschoolers would have some of that stuff in the basement lab.

Steph – has this ever been discussed in homeschool circles down there?

    Other than E and F, those are all pretty std org chem pieces (but I have no idea what N is). But I know the synthesis of methamphetamine. Hardly any of that stuff is required.

    Never in my homeschooling circles. Wow. Er … wonder what they’d make of the home brewing supplies?

    Well thanks to that new Federal Law or maybe it’s a State Law at the moment I am to sick to think straight and really don’t care. I had to stand in line forever in order to buy a box of Tylenol for severe congestion, and couldn’t even find the Tylenol Cold & Flu that used to having me feeling better right away.

    Apparently punishing the sick law abiding citizens is the way to prevent the meth heads from breaking the law.
