Short Term Homeschooling
Apr 04
I must admit that I have not given much thought to the idea of short term homeschoolers. For us, it’s a way of life. However, this article by a mom that homeschooled her 6th grader for one year to get her through some issues at school is very interesting. As she points out, a short termer is going to be much more tied to the school curriculum than us lifers, because they know their kid is going back next year and needs to stay on the same track. She also makes some good points about the tension between FOD homeschoolers and our cyberschool / part time / short timer cousins. Homeschoolers are not immune from cliquishness.
I think it can take a year to really get your homeschool legs, so to speak. The downside here is that mom and daughter were probably just really starting to get it when they decided to go back. I bet a lot of short timers would end up as lifers if they gave it two years.
I’m not exactly known for being kind to people that write about homeschooling
And quite honestly I clicked through expecting to mentally fisk the article as I read it. That didn’t happen. It’s actually very good.

That issue of Brain, Child is sitting on my pile of stuff to read. I’ve made it through the Hooters essay, but not yet the homeschool one.
Moving it to the top…
