Homeschoolers embarrassing us again
November 22nd, 2008 by COD
Not content with supporting the least qualified VP candidate in history (Palin), the wacky right is now calling for a boycott of ABC over a throwaway one liner by a comedienne Joy Behar on The View. The joked flopped badly, Behar looked like an idiot, and that should be it. But of course it isn’t, because too many homeschoolers are just as dumb and ignorant as the loony left makes them out to be.
Effective today, my kids are in very exclusive private school. I simply can’t take being associated with these idiots any longer.
I saw it at HERPES first.

Love the security code, Chris! So which face up top is his?
Regarding this whole foo-furrah, aim your sights a little higher and look at the big picture. It’s not just about homeschooling, and if the tactics work your kids won’t be safe in any school, no matter what descriptive word is in front of it.
Actually, Skip isn’t in that picture at the top! It’s just a shot I took at a show that I really liked.
You need to change your tagline (again!)
BTW, I think you meant “can’t” in your last sentence.
Joy Behar has tactics??
I just say “I keep her home”, “We’re educational anarchists”, or “She’s an independent learner” depending on who I’m talking to. I’ve refused to call myself a homeschooler since last summer.
Unfortunately my oldest went to middle school this year and much to my surprise she’s loving it, so I might have to worry about finding another name for public school mom. I don’t want to be associated with them either!
What if we see the same kind of braod disavowal of “homeshcooling” because it got too out-there, that the GOP has seen? Leaving only the “demented” of course. . .
Homeschoolers vs. homeschoolers vs. anti-homeschoolers…I just don’t get it? So it basically boils down to that you are offended as a homeschooler by a homeschooler that is offended by an anti-homeschooler? Gee, I don’t want or need any of you on either side of this silly quibble to defend me. My children speak loud enough…
HA! I had to come and see the sock puppet again for myself. I love that her first line is a question, “homeschoolers vs. homeschoolers vs. anti-homeschoolers…I just don’t get it?” Yes, “Gina,” I think you do get it.
I don’t know that anyone has said they are offended by the homeschoolers who are so up in arms about Joy Behar’s comment. I think it’s obvious that we are just a little dismayed that, yet again, “those homeschoolers” are making a big deal out of absolutely nothing.
I wonder who Gina is. Or I should say, I wonder who Gina is?
Really, I don’t get it. I like blogs, though I am not a blogger myself. I like this blog and I like the blog I sock puppeted on (or rather from…since I left the comment there first). What the hell does sock puppet mean anyway?
I actually agree with you that ‘The View’ thing is silly and I personally don’t take offense to what the lady said either. However, I am glad there are bloggers that report these silly little things. It’s not like I am going to use it to boycott anything. Hell, I don’t even have television. I guess I just like to see it all for idle curiosity. However, I did find it rather ironic that some where indeed offended by some that where offended by the remarks. It seems silly.
My name is indeed Gina. My last name is rather irrelevant since you would not know me anyway. I don’t blog, as I stated, but I do however homeschool. I don’t have a nice little label for myself unless you count mom and wife as a label. No religious, secular, un-, or any tags to add to my homeschooling. However, I will read all blogs…secular, religious, un-, etc. I, myself, chose to leave tags behind when I left high school. Anything else you want to know about me?
Since the other blog I commented on obviously reads here then I guess I don’t need to copy and paste and “sock puppet?”. Again, what the hell does that mean?
Haha….I looked up sock puppeting on Urban Dictionary and I think I get it now. I assume you didn’t mean the latter of the use of the word, since that would be pretty gross, so I must assume you think I am a fellow blogger being anon. As I stated above, I don’t blog. However, my email is real and my name is real. For whatever that is worth…
Hmmm this whole boycott pattern has me thinking about your earlier post about how Google is now a tool to predict & track Flu outbreaks.
Maybe Google can be used to predict & track “Homeschool Boycott Outrage?” Doesn’t that sound like a highly contagious disease??? It seems to pop up randomly from nowhere and seems to evolve from one type of issue virus to another in semi-regular cycles.
It certainly seems to be quite infective in some homeschool groups yet fortunately there is a group of homeschoolers that are naturally resistant– that might yet give us hope for a general cure or maybe a vaccine. Who knows???
hahaha
That’s awesome Traci, although I’m not sure we need Google to predict that. Any perceived slight in the media against HSers that makes it to Spunky’s blog is a near certainty to lead to a boycott!
BTW – I’m not implying Spunky is behind the boycott, I’m pretty sure she finds them as silly as us. But her blog does seem to attract a lot of the EOH-SofA (Easily Outraged Home-Schoolers of America)
I read Spunky’s Blog quite often. I don’t take her for being a boycott starter either. Yes, she seems to have the opposite kind of readers than say Daryl’s blog.
I would never count her in with the sheeple though. She certainly has a mind of her own in my opinion & I appreciate that. Good for her for hosting some challenging discussions & not deleting comments that are less than agreeable.
In my personal, political & homeschool beliefs I always seem to fall right about in the middle of the extremes of far right & far left. Maybe that is because I tend to follow a little bit of each side for news of what is going on in the world. I’ll watch CNN, MSNBC & FOX and read Spunky & Daryl’s Blogs for example. I look for things in stories/events that overlap for both sides and use that as a measurement for what seems to be true.
I feel lucky to have good homeschool friends on both sides of the aisle. I find myself learning & growing as person everyday. I try to be respectful of the beliefs of who I am hanging for the day.
I don’t bring the steaks to the Vegan cookout or beer to the denim jumper playgroup but I don’t run to empty out my fridge & hide it all either if I know they are coming to my house that day.
I then count it as a true blessing when I find a friend that accepts me where I am if it differs from their viewpoint. More often than not I find respect is mutual.
I like how Traci puts this:
“I don’t bring the steaks to the Vegan cookout or beer to the denim jumper playgroup but I don’t run to empty out my fridge & hide it all either if I know they are coming to my house that day.”
[...] with the disclaimer: “I’m not one of ‘those’ homeschoolers.” And his post on the subject of the aforementioned comedienne’s gaffe… well… it’s not for [...]
