This is absolutely not news to any reader here, but apparently it is possible to get into a top college without the AP classes, 99th percentile SAT, president of the honor society, and other cookie cutter accomplishments of the typical high achieving high school student.

That is good news, because my kids are sort of counting on it :)

    I counted on it. My grades in HS certainly weren’t spectacular or even anything to brag about. I had high SATs, but I suspect what really helped me was that I had a letter of recommendation from a college professor who stated that “Daniel is the only student at his HS who can read Latin reliably.”

    Now, my HS was small. But that letter (and a bunch of science projects) made a point that I wasn’t a *typical* college applicant.
