A few years ago we checked out Sarah Susanka's books at the library. Her idea of "small" wasn't close to ours (we started out with a very efficient 660 sf) and they weren't exactly "affordable" either. But her designs are beautiful, emphasizing detail and quality over quantity, and building a house to fit you rather than trying to fit a cookie-cutter house like all the ones they design today.

I want our next house to be bigger. Granted, we have more people that you do. :) I think the house we're in now is around 1500sq.ft. There's no formal living room.

Our 900sf bungalow didn't have a dining room -- and no 'breakfast nook' either. We built a family room in the basement and turned the living room into a dining room. The five of us are much more comfortable around the dining table than the tiny kitchen table.
