On being "On"

Matt Wilson writes, quite hilariously, about having one of "those nights" where everything just falls into place.

Kid Rock goes country

I was flipping thru the channels last night - on my way to TechTV, when I caught a quick glimpse of Kid Rock, on CMT. Intrigued, I turned back. Kid Rock and Hank Williams Jr. were putting down some very cool country blues together. I was quite surprised. If Kid Rock wants to drop the white boy rapper with an attitude act, I think he could put out a roots rock album I would like. I'm not holding my breath though. Pandering to 16 year olds with too much mommy and daddy provided disposable income is paying way too well for him to risk it all on a serious music.

Is this a good thing?

When you map an address at Mapquest, along with the usual map you now get an arial photo of the address. Here is my house, more or less centered in the picture (2nd house going right from the intersection). That dirt area is gone. Its been paved and houses are being built.

If I were President...

By Breck, age 7 and 50 weeks
I would enfore the law. I would make people stop littering. I would make planes smaller so the crashes aren't as big.

By Delaney, Age 6
I would make people ride bikes and walk. I would make everyone have a flower garden.

This was a homeschool assignment on Monday.

As a Libertarian, I'm somewhat concerned that both my kids are so willing to use the force of government to impose their will. Although Breck's answer isn't too bad as littering is a violation of the rights of the property owner, and thus enforcement of litter laws could be an acceptable use of government. My daughter however...how did I get a granola crunching tree hugger in the family? (grin)

I am surprised the events of 9/11 are still weighing so heavily on Breck's mind.

Interesting answers, and not what I would have expected....

Windows for Cell Phones

I thought it was a joke at first. This brings at least two questions to mind...

Who wants a cell phone that requires a reboot regularly?
Where will they put the Control-Alt-Del keys?

She said Yes

It doesn't get any geekier than this...

CmdrTaco, aka Rob Malda, founder of Slashdot, has proposed marriage by posting the proposal on Slashdot. He must of been damn sure of getting the yes!

Congrats to the newly engaged happy couple.

Smile, your on a government camera

Dot Con

PBS recently broadcast a fantastic epidose of Frontline, focusing on the dot com IPO craziness of the late 90's. I missed the show, but thanks to the wonders of Internet, I was able to watch the complete show online. I worked for one of those dot cons, Homecom Communications. We went public in early 97 with barely $2 million in revenue, huge losses, and a nifty prospectus containing pictures of software products that existed only as alpha code, or demos written in Perl. We crashed long before any options vested.

Beyond the convenience of deciding exactly when I watch the show, sans a Tivo, the website is a really great example of using the web the extend the television program. The website contains extended interviews, links to related information, etc.

I highly recommend this show. Check your PBS listings for a rerun, or watch it online if you have a broadband connection and a Quicktime viewer.

Laid Off Techies

ZDNET has a scary article about laid off tchnology workers taking blue collar jobs just to pay the bills, because they can't find anything else to do. Sometimes I have a hard time completely believing these stories. I suspect there are often other factors at work that the author of the story doesn't bother to report. Also, I think part of it is that the dot com boom handed out a lot of over inflated titles, so a lot of 25 year old kids have unrealistic title and pay expectations. Luckily, I'm just a common sales guy. If I can't stay in technology I could make enough selling cars to pay the mortgage and put food on the table.

100 Worst Movies of All Time

Not a whole lot to argue with, although I do take exception to Weekend at Bernie's, Xanadu, and Porky's being on the list. Weekend at Bernie's is hilarious, slapstick humor at its best. Porky's is probably one of the best teen sex comedies ever. Not that that is something to be real proud of, but it ought to keep you off the 100 worst list. And Xanadu...any movie with Olivia Newton John looking that hot can't be that bad.

CD Review: Ryan Adams Gold

Ryan Adams is supossed to be the savior of roots rock, the guy to pull the genre into the mainstream all by himself. It's not going to happen. At least, not with this album. It's decent, there is nothing terribly wrong with it. However, it slips into a Billy Joel Piano Man kind of sound occasionally. Not exactly what I want from somebody who is the next big thing in alt-country. The songwriting is a little weak too. It's a 70 minute album. He might have been better off cutting it at 50 minutes.

On well, I bought it with Amazon Associates money, so it didn't really cost me anything.

Patriots win!!!!

You are 24 years old, you led your team down the field against one of the best defenses in football, in the last minute, with no timeouts. Oh yeah, it's the Super Bowl and your team wins the game.

What can Tom Brady ever do in his career to top this? I mean, he might be the next Dan Marino, he might throw for 40,000 yards in his career, he might win 4 more Super Bowls, but I have to think it will never compare to this. Wow!

Maybe this is what we need to break Bambino's Curse against the Red Sox.
