My first Aetna health insurance idiocy

Hey, we’ve been Aetna members for only 6 weeks, and already I’ve got a story. Michelle takes a mega Vitamin D supplement once per month. It is prescription only. Because Aetna will only allow the pharmacy to dispense a 30 day supply at a time, she can only get 1 pill at a time for [...]

CIGNA insider comes clean on the health insurance industry

Video Transcript The comments at Metafilter are pretty good too. There is way too much here for me to process. However, his overall point goes back to something I realized a few weeks ago. I mentioned it on Facebook, don’t think I ever did a blog post on it though. The reason that for profit [...]

Can Google predict flu outbreaks

The geniuses at Google think they might be able to predict flu outbreaks up to 2 weeks before the CDC can identify the hotspots. The theory is that people start searching on flu related terms when they start to feel ill, well before they ever get to a doctor. By tracking those search terms they [...]

Fun with health insurance companies, part whatever

Michelle went to a new endocrinologist today. There are a couple of new endos in town, so she thought this was an opportune time to stop driving 90 minutes each way to the doctor. The doctor appointment was fine, except that they do no blood work in the office. Even the standard A1C requires a [...]

Beer may kill you, if you can find it.

Hops shortage worsens. Drinking may lead to pancreatic cancer. So basically, we are screwed either way. Seriously, the pancreatic cancer link is connected to 21 beers per week, or as my brother calls it, moderation. I’m kidding! (About my brother, not about the cancer).

When faith healing fails to heal

Two parents in Wisconsin face 25 years in prison after allowing their 11 year old daughter to die of undiagnosed diabetic ketoacidosis. They didn’t go to the doctor because they believe that bible tells them that physical illness comes from sin, and healing will come from God via prayer. Apparently, their prayers were not heard. Water banned from MLB dugouts

Gatorade is the official sports drink of the baseball, so MLB has banned all other liquid refreshment from the dugout. Players are not allowed to drink water in the dugout, only Gatorade. I guess if you are screwed if you just don’t like the stuff, or prefer water, or are diabetic.

What was that reason for the war on drugs again?

One of the standard “truths” of the drug war justification is that drugs are so addictive we must expend trillions trying to save Americans from themselves. Not so addictive stuff like ganja, and Sudafed, gets labeled as a gateway drug to provide justification for it’s inclusion in the drug war. If you’ll take a look [...]

The power of sound

My friend Charlie asked if I could help him raise awareness about pertussis, aka whooping cough. So I clicked over to check out the site. You should do the same, because I’m curious if you will react the same way I did to the sound clip on the site. It’s only 15 seconds or so, [...]

The problem with healthcare in a nutshell

I had an upper endoscopy on 2/1. The hospital charged $5093.24 for a procedure that takes 5 minutes of the surgeon’s time. (BTW, that charge doesn’t include the surgeon’s or the anesthesiologist’s charges). I got to the hospital two hours in advance and left after an hour after the procedure, so I was there about [...]
