I’ve seen 44% of the top 250 films from the IMDB list. How many have you seen?

The Spiderwick Chronicles

We stayed out of the oppressive heat in these parts and stayed in the nice cool basement with a movie this afternoon. The kids and Michelle have read the books, I haven’t. I thought it was a cute and fun movie that is appropriate for the entire family. I certainly enjoyed it.

The first episode of the 3 part series is online now. The series will be streamed for free through July 20. After that you’ll have to wait for the DVD and buy it, or find a pirated copy online. For those of you that are less geekily inclined, Dr. Horrible is a musical directed by [...]

Wall-E

We went to see Wall-E yesterday. Pixar gave us robot characters with more depth than most real life human actors can put forth. Sure, it’s a satire on our consumption driven society. Wall-E and Wal-Mart, coincidence? I think not. It’s also a rather distopian view of the future of earth and it’s inhabitants. However, since [...]

Spider-Man 3

Meh. Too much soap opera action and not enough web slinging action.

I am Iron Man

The girls had a 4H thing Friday night, so the boy and I took in Iron Man. Generally speaking, I’ve found most movie adaptations of comic books to be less than stellar. This is not the case with Iron Man. This is simply a great movie. Plenty of action, and in an odd turn for [...]

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

My advice: stay home and watch the original Indiana Jones movie again. You’ll have more fun, because if you sit through this movie you may just want to bash your skull against a brick wall. Really, it’s just not very good. The story is a mess. The ending is ridiculous, even by Indiana Jones standards.

Stardust

If you haven’t seen Stardust add it to your rental queue now. If you liked The Princess Bride you will like Stardust. It’s a fairy tale. It’s got a naive young hero. It’s got a spunky princess. It’s got pirates, witches, a unicorn, and evil government overlords. It’s based on the book by Neil Gaimen, [...]

There are no cellphones in Juno

Juno was showing in the O’Donnell basement theater last night. The movie completely lives up to the hype. It was sweet, charming, and frequently hilarious. Michelle noticed something rather odd about it though. There are no cell phones or PCs in the movie. Yes, the hamburger phone was a plot device to emphasis Juno’s quirkiness, [...]

Expelled Propoganda, a fisking

It’s been a while since I fisked something. So let’s take on this load of crap proclaiming the glory of Expelled’s opening weekend. The headline is fisk worthy all by itself. ‘Expelled’ Explodes into Top 10 Box Office Maybe if they mean explosive in the explosive diarrhea sense. Other wise, there is nothing explosive about [...]

Expelled an epic fail at the box office.

Expelled earned $2.9 million for the weekend on over 1000 screens. Sicko earned $4.4 million on only 441 screens on it’s opening weekend last year. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of spin about how thousands of people enjoyed the propaganda, but propaganda is all that it is. Expelled is a commercial flop. Ben Stein clearly [...]

Movie review: I Am Legend

You really can’t can’t go wrong with Will Smith in a zombie movie. This is a good first “horror” movie for the kids. Just tense enough to be scary without anything too traumatizing. We watched it as a family, but we are weird that way There is a bit of a pro God message with [...]

Pro-lifers protest at a children’s film.

The headline from Fark is brilliant. Pro-life group chanted anti-abortion slogans at the premiere of “Horton Hears a Who”, apparently not aware of the difference between a cinematic abortion and a literal one.

The reports of Patrick Swayze’s imminent death have been greatly exaggerated, maybe

I saw the first reports early today but given that the source was a tabloid I decided not to post about it. Now his people have confirmed that Swayze is undergoing treatment for Pancreatic Cancer. The 5 year survival rate for Pancreatic cancer is 5%. It’s about the worst cancer to get. Most people are [...]

The Golden Compass

The boy and I made it to The Golden Compass tonight. The girls went to Enchanted. I thought it was a fine and enjoyable movie. Based on my recollection of the book, most of the major plot elements were there, although I think they chopped up the order significantly and the movie ends with a [...]
